Biography of Brigitte Fassbender
Brigitte Fassbender (born 1939) is a German mezzo-soprano opera singer. She studied at the Nuremberg Conservatory and made her debut in 1961 in Munich, performing the role of Nicklausse in Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffmann."
Repertoire and Career
Fassbender's repertoire includes roles such as Octavian in "Der Rosenkavalier," Brangäne in "Tristan und Isolde," Dorabella in "Così fan tutte," Klytämnestra in "Elektra" by Richard Strauss, and Countess Geschwitz in Berg's "Lulu," among others. She has a special focus on chamber repertoire.
Theatres and Festivals
Fassbender has performed in various prestigious theatres and festivals around the world. She has been associated with the Covent Garden since 1971, where she has performed the role of Octavian. She has also appeared at the Grand Opera as Brangäne since 1972 and at the Salzburg Festival among the best interpretations of Dorabella. Fassbender made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1974 as Octavian and has also performed at the Bayreuth Festival in 1983-84. She has appeared in San Francisco, Tokyo, and many other venues.
Film and Directing
In 1985, Fassbender portrayed the role of Charlotte in the film-opera "Werther," directed by P. Weigl. From the 1980s onwards, she has also worked as a director, with notable productions including "Der Rosenkavalier" in Munich in 1989 and the English premiere of Franz Schreker's opera "Der ferne Klang" in Leeds in 1992.

Fassbender's recordings include performances as Dorabella conducted by Bernhard Klee, Brangäne conducted by Carlos Kleiber, and Countess Geschwitz conducted by Colin Davis, among many others.
