British Archaeologist: Barry Coles

Barry Coles, a renowned British archaeologist, is renowned for his groundbreaking work in post-glacial wetland archaeology. His research encompasses ancient climatology, paleogeography, and the study of ancient animal and human habitats and migrations.

Doggerland Theory

Coles's most significant achievement is his Doggerland theory. He proposed the existence of Doggerland, a prehistoric landmass that stretched from Dogger Bank to Pas-de-Calais, covered by the sea since the end of the Mesolithic period. The theory has gained wide acceptance among archaeologists, with the disappearance of Doggerland attributed to the Storegga Slide, a massive landslide.

The Coles Scholarship

In collaboration with his wife, Brajony Coles, Barry Coles established the Coles Scholarship. This scholarship supports students affiliated with the Prehistoric Society (UK) in participating in excavations of prehistoric sites, fostering the study and advancement of this field.
