Early Life and Apprenticeship
Hajibeyim Zeynalabdin Taghi oghlu Zulalov, better known by his stage name Bulbuljan ("Little Nightingale" in Azerbaijani), was born in the mountainous city of Shusha in 1845. From a young age, he exhibited a remarkable talent for singing, particularly in the traditional Azerbaijani musical form known as mugham.
Musical Journey and Recognition
In his adolescence, Bulbuljan embarked on a musical pilgrimage, traveling throughout the Caucasus and Persia. His exceptional performances of mughams in various languages, including Azerbaijani, Georgian, Persian, Lezgi, Kumyk, and Russian, earned him widespread acclaim. He became known for his mellifluous voice and virtuosic ornamentation.
Patronage and Honors
Bulbuljan's fame caught the attention of prominent dignitaries, including Tsar Alexander III of Russia and the Persian Shah Muzaffar al-Din. The latter bestowed upon him the prestigious Order of the Lion and the Sun, the highest honor for foreigners in Persia.
Collaboration in Tbilisi
From 1875 to 1905, Bulbuljan resided in Tbilisi, where he formed a renowned musical partnership with the renowned tarist Sadiqjan, also a native of Shusha. Together, they mesmerized audiences with their exquisite rendition of mughams.
Return to Shusha and Later Years
In 1905, Bulbuljan returned to Shusha, his beloved hometown. He devoted his remaining years to mentoring his orphaned nephews and fostering the musical legacy of his family. In the 1920s, he relocated to Baku, where he taught at prestigious music institutions.
Musical Legacy and Influence
Bulbuljan's contributions to Azerbaijani music are immeasurable. He is regarded as a master of the mugham tradition, and his style continues to inspire performers to this day. His descendants, including his daughter, granddaughter, and nephews, have carried on the musical lineage of the great Bulbuljan.
