Early Life and Education
Shirley was born in San Jose, California in 1941. She was the third of six children, growing up with two sisters and three brothers. Her father's military career took the family around the world, and she attended high school in Morocco. Upon returning to California, she pursued a business degree at Santa Rosa Junior College.
Path to Romance Novels
While working at Solano County, Shirley met her lifelong friend and mentor, Rosemary Rogers. Inspired by Rogers, she ventured into the world of romance novels.
Historical Romance Debut
Shirley made her mark in the historical romance genre with her first novel, "Lady Gypsy," which remains popular to this day. She established a distinctive voice in the industry, capturing the essence of historical settings with vivid descriptions and compelling characters.
Marriage and Personal Life
In 1963, Shirley married Howard Busby, who supported her literary aspirations. Together, they raised a family while Shirley continued to write and publish novels.
