Early Life and Family
Candice Patton was born on June 24, 1988, in Jackson, Mississippi. Her parents are Ariana Jackson, a white mother, and Adrian D. Patton, a black father. She has an older brother named Adrian, who is also an actor. Patton's parents divorced when she was five, but she maintains a close relationship with her father. After the divorce, Patton's mother moved the family to Plano, Texas, where Patton attended Plano East Senior High School.
Education and Theater Background
Patton's interest in acting began during high school, where she performed in local theater productions, including Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus." She went on to attend Southern Methodist University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre.
Career Beginnings
Patton's television debut came in 2004, when she participated in the "Soap Star Screen Test" and was cast in five episodes of the soap opera "The Young and the Restless." She also appeared in small roles in shows such as "The Bold and the Beautiful," "Entourage," and "Grey's Anatomy." To supplement her income, Patton briefly worked as a waitress at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and Pink Berry.
Breakthrough with "The Flash"
In 2014, Patton was cast as Iris West, the girlfriend and eventual wife of Barry Allen, the second Flash, in the superhero television series "The Flash." This role became her breakthrough and earned her the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress on Television in 2017. Patton's portrayal of Iris broke with the traditional white, brunette depiction of the character in the comics.
Personal Life and Advocacy
Patton is a feminist and an advocate for women's rights. She is involved in the online platform Shethority, which provides a space for women to share stories and support each other.
