Saint Candidus

Saint Candidus was a martyr who suffered for his faith in Christ during the reign of Emperor Diocletian (284-305) in Trebizond. Together with Valerian and Aquila, Candidus fled to the mountains of Trebizond (Asia Minor) to escape persecution by hiding among the animals.

Persecution and Torture

However, their refuge was short-lived as they were soon discovered by their persecutors and brought back to Trebizond. They were subjected to severe torture, including beatings with ox sinews, scraping with iron, salting of wounds, and burning with fire.

Martyrdom

After several days of torment, Saint Eugene the Great Martyr was also captured and suffered similar tortures. All four martyrs were then thrown into a fiery furnace, but emerged unharmed. Finally, their heads were severed, marking their martyrdom.

Commemoration

Saint Candidus is commemorated on January 21 (February 3, New Style). His memory serves as a testament to the unwavering faith and courage of the early Christian martyrs who faced persecution and death for their beliefs.
