In 1755, Porthan was appointed Professor of Theology at the Royal Academy in Åbo (now Turku), Finland. His tenure as its rector from 1755 to 1766 marked a pivotal period in the academy's history. Linguistic Legacy
Porthan's most profound contribution lies in his pioneering work on Finnish linguistics. He recognized the importance of vernacular languages and embarked on a comprehensive study of Finnish.
