h2: Education and Early Expeditions

Carl Koldewey was a German traveler and polar explorer. He received his education at the Polytechnic Institute in Hanover and the University of Göttingen, graduating in 1867. In 1868, on behalf of August Petermann, he led the first German expedition to the North Pole, which he documented in his work "Die erste deutsche Nordpolar-Expedition" (published in Petermann's "Mitteilungen" in 1871). In 1869, he embarked on a second North Pole journey.

h2: Scientific Contributions

In 1871, Koldewey was appointed an assistant at the Hamburg Naval Observatory. Under the direction of Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, he processed the meteorological and hydrographic findings of his travels into "Die zwete deutsche Nordpolarfahrt" (1873–1879). With the establishment of the Imperial Naval Observatory in Germany, Koldewey became the head of its second department. His research was published in "Annalen der Hydrographie und maritimen Meteorologie" and the publications of the Imperial Observatory.
