Early Life and Career

Ray Stevens, the legendary professional wrestler, began his journey at the tender age of 15. Born in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, he relocated to Columbus, Ohio, later in his childhood. Despite his humble beginnings, Stevens possessed an exceptional talent that caught the attention of renowned wrestler Buddy Rogers. Rogers became a pivotal figure in his early training, recognizing Stevens's remarkable abilities.

NWA Dominance and Stardom in San Francisco

In the 1950s, Stevens joined forces with "Professor" Roy Shire and "Brother" Ray Shire to capture the prestigious NWA World Tag Team Championship. His career reached a new height in 1959 when he moved to San Francisco and wrestled under his own name. Dominating the NWA San Francisco division, Stevens became a nine-time NWA San Francisco United States Champion and a three-time NWA San Francisco Tag Team Champion alongside Pat Patterson.

Bitter Rivalry and Personal Challenges

Stevens's tenure in San Francisco was marked by intense battles with the formidable Pepper Gomez. Their rivalry defined an era of high-stakes confrontations. Despite his impressive record, Stevens's birthplace was often misrepresented by promoters for audience appeal. His Southern accent and true origin were intentionally obscured to enhance his appeal as an "everyman."

Success with the "Blond Bombers"

In 1965, Stevens formed a formidable tag team with Pat Patterson, known as the "Blond Bombers." Together, they reigned as NWA World Tag Team Champions and captured the prestigious NWA World Tag Team Championship Series. However, their partnership later dissolved in acrimony, leading to memorable matches between the former allies in 1969.

Near-Championship in WWWF and AWA Reign

In 1967, Stevens narrowly missed securing the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship from Bruno Sammartino. However, due to controversial rule violations, the title was ultimately returned to Sammartino. Undeterred, Stevens joined the American Wrestling Association (AWA) in 1971, where he captured the AWA World Tag Team Championship four times with Nick Bockwinkel.

World Wrestling Federation and Career Decline

After leaving the AWA, Stevens joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). During this period, he struggled with injuries and the effects of steroid use. His once-dominating presence had diminished.

Legacy and Hall of Fame Induction

Stevens retired from wrestling in 1992 and returned to the AWA. He passed away from a heart attack in 1996 at the age of 60.
