Early Career and SuccessCarlo Janka, born on October 15, 1986, in Obersaxen, Switzerland, has rapidly ascended to become a rising star in Swiss skiing. In his early career, he competed internationally for the first time in 2001. From 2004 onwards, he participated in the European Cup. In 2005, he debuted in the World Cup but failed to finish in either race he entered.
Breakthrough and Accolades
Janka's breakthrough came in 2008 when he rose from 65th to second place in the World Cup giant slalom on November 29. Two weeks later, he achieved his first World Cup victory in giant slalom. In the same season, he secured gold in giant slalom and bronze in downhill at the 2009 World Championships.
Historic Victory at Beaver Creek
During the races at Beaver Creek from December 4 to 6, 2009, Janka made history by becoming the first skier to win three World Cup races in one weekend since Hermann Maier in the 1999-2000 season. He triumphed in the super combined, giant slalom, and downhill.
Olympic Gold and Additional Victories
On January 16, 2010, Janka emerged victorious in the downhill race in Wengen, the longest and fastest World Cup slope. In the run-up to the Winter Olympics, he narrowly missed out on winning the super combined, placing second to Bode Miller.
