Carlos Edwin Colón Sr.: The Legend of Puerto Rican Wrestling
Early Life and CareerBorn on July 18, 1948, in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico, Carlos Edwin Colón González moved to Brooklyn, New York, in 1961. There, he developed a passion for wrestling and enrolled in a training school.
On February 16, 1966, Colón made his wrestling debut against Bobo Brazil. His victory brought him his first $15 earnings. He traveled extensively throughout the US and Canada, eventually settling in Canada for several years.
Return to Puerto Rico and Capitol Sports Promotions
Homesickness brought Colón back to Puerto Rico in 1973. Together with Croatian wrestler Victor Jovica, he founded Capitol Sports Promotions, a company that promoted wrestling matches and shows on television.
Rise to Stardom
Colón's wrestling skills flourished in the 1970s. He became a successful singles competitor and achieved notable success in the tag team division. From 1974 to 1981, he held the North American Tag Team Championship multiple times with various partners.
World Wrestling Council (WWC)
In the early 1980s, WWC, which Colón owned and founded, emerged as the dominant wrestling promotion in Puerto Rico. Colón forged a partnership with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), gaining access to a larger pool of wrestlers and matches. He also held a high-ranking position on the NWA Board of Directors.
Universal Heavyweight Champion and Television World Champion
From 1982 to 1999, Colón captured the Universal Heavyweight Championship an astonishing 26 times. He also won the World Television Championship three times.
Retirement and Return
Beginning in 1992, Colón repeatedly announced his retirement, only to return to the ring each time. His official retirement took place on July 19, 2008.
Legacy
Today, Carlos Colón Sr. is a wrestling legend. He bears over 70 scars as a testament to his countless battles in the ring. His sons, Eddie and Carlos Jr., followed in his footsteps, becoming renowned professional wrestlers. Colón's contributions to wrestling in Puerto Rico are immeasurable, and he is widely regarded as the father of the sport in the island nation.
