Biography of Katie Rigby
Early LifeKatie Roxana Rigby, a well-known American gymnast, was born on December 12, 1952, in Los Alamitos, California. She grew up in a family with her parents Anita and Paul Rigby, an older brother Steve, an older sister Michelle, a younger brother Jeff, and a younger sister Jill. From a young age, Katie developed a passion for gymnastics.
Gymnastics Career
Katie gained recognition in the United States for her outstanding performance as a gymnast. Her participation in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, where she received the highest scores among American gymnasts, helped popularize the sport in the country. In addition, Katie became the first American woman to win a silver medal in the World Championships in 1970, making her a trailblazer in international gymnastics. She also won the National Championships in 1970 and 1972.
Transition to Acting
Due to an injury, Katie had to end her gymnastics career in 1972. She then married Tommy Mason, a professional football player, and they had two sons together. During this time, Katie began exploring acting opportunities. In 1974, she played the role of Peter Pan in the Broadway musical of the same name. Her portrayal of the iconic character resonated with audiences, and she continued to perform in the musical throughout the 1990s, both on Broadway and during tours. Katie also ventured into television, working as a commentator for ABC Sports for 18 years and appearing in various television movies.
Personal Life and Continued Success
Katie's role as Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" brought her significant acclaim. It was during the filming of this movie that she met her second husband, Tom McCoy, who supported her in her battle with bulimia, a disorder she had struggled with since the end of her gymnastics career. Their marriage brought Katie new joy as they welcomed two daughters, Theresa and Caitlin. In the 1980s, Katie began openly discussing her illness with the public, using it as a way to raise awareness and advocate for better understanding of eating disorders.
McCoy Rigby Entertainment
Katie and Tom McCoy founded a theater company called "McCoy Rigby Entertainment." They continue to tour with the show "Peter Pan," with Katie shining as a prominent star. In 2005, it was announced that Katie would retire from performing in the role, but she reprised it in Pittsburgh in 2008 and in Branson, Missouri in 2009.
