Foundations: The Birth of Tsentralny Gastronom
In the quaint city of Kyiv, a chance encounter during a school field trip in 1985 sparked the formation of Tsentralny Gastronom (CG). Classmates Vova "Jager" Medvedev and Igor Emelyanov coined the band's name under the shadow of the future "Central Grocer" store.
Embracing the Studio: A Focus on Creation
CG's initial rehearsals took place in the house where the store would eventually open. Unlike many bands, the group prioritized studio work over live performances. They reveled in the process of creating new songs, capturing the raw emotion of their compositions. Collaborations with diverse and unexpected individuals, including acclaimed artists, enriched their creative process.
Experimentation and Innovation: Evolving Rock Lyrics
CG experimented relentlessly with language, developing approximately eight unconventional methods for composing rock lyrics. This approach to songwriting proved fruitful, and the band's creative milestones included:
- 1985-1986:Inception, initial rehearsals, and recordings
- 1987-88:Hiatus due to military service- 1989-90:Revival with the release of numerous critically acclaimed albums
- 1991-93:Stability and artistic maturity, featuring the release of iconic albums and the birth of the "square-nested" poetic style
Live Performances and the Evolution of the Lineup

Stagnation and Creative Challenges
The band's active touring schedule led to a period of stagnation from 1993 to 1997. A second period of decline followed from 1997 to 1999, marked by unsuccessful recording attempts and apathy.
Dissolution and Its Impact
In the year 2000, the band disbanded, leaving a legacy of innovation and experimentation. The members' paths diverged:
- One underwent a lobotomy of the right hemisphere of the brain.
- Another met an untimely demise under mysterious circumstances.- A third battled alcoholism and lost their creative abilities after undergoing treatment.
- A fourth became a prominent music radio host but developed indifference towards music.
- A fifth secured a lucrative and prestigious position.
Revival and BeyondIn 2004, CG reunited with a two-man lineup and recorded previously unreleased songs. Collaborations with renowned musicians, including Eugene Kokorin, Mikhail Maltsev, Igor Zhevtun, and Ksenia Korotaeva, produced the album "Latimeria" in 2005.
Today, CG continues to record and perform with a revitalized lineup, carrying forward their legacy of boundary-pushing creativity.
