Chandra Levy: A Life Cut Short
Chandra Ann Levy was born on April 14, 1977 in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in Modesto, California. The daughter of Robert and Susan Levy, she was raised in a Conservative Jewish household.
Education and Career
Levy attended San Francisco State University, where she studied journalism. After an internship with the California Department of Education and work in the office of Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, she went on to earn a master's degree in public administration from the University of Southern California. As part of her studies, she moved to Washington, D.C. and interned with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Disappearance and Death
On May 1, 2001, Levy disappeared after an afternoon jog in Rock Creek Park. Her body was found in the park on May 22, 2002, and her autopsy confirmed her identity. The investigation revealed she had been strangled, and the case quickly became a national sensation.
Gary Condit's Involvement
During the investigation, it emerged that Levy had been romantically involved with Congressman Gary Condit, a married Democrat 30 years her senior. Condit initially denied the relationship but later admitted to it. The scandal surrounding Condit's involvement damaged his reputation and contributed to his defeat in the 2002 election.
Arrest and Trial
In 2009, Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, was arrested and charged with Levy's murder. Guandique has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is scheduled to begin in October 2010. Guandique also faces charges related to the 2005 murder of Joyce Chunn, another petite brunette who disappeared and was killed in Rock Creek Park.
