Charles de Labédoyère

Charles de Labédoyère, a French count and military commander, played a significant role during the First French Empire.

Early Military Career

At the age of 20, Labédoyère embarked on his military career. From 1806 to 1807, he fought in the Napoleonic Wars against Russia in Poland and Prussia. Impressing his superiors, he was appointed as an adjutant to Marshal Lannes.

Spanish Campaign and Promotion

In 1808, Labédoyère joined the Spanish campaign. He suffered an injury during the Battle of Tudela. Upon recovering, he joined Prince Eugene de Beauharnais' staff in 1809. His exceptional service led him to be appointed commander of the 112th Line Regiment.

From Loyalty to Rebellion

In 1813, Labédoyère distinguished himself at the Battles of Lützen and Bautzen. However, he was wounded at Kolberg. After Napoleon abdicated in 1813, Labédoyère rejoined the army under the restored Bourbon monarchy. He was awarded the Order of Saint Louis and placed in command of the 7th Line Regiment in Grenoble.

In March 1815, upon Napoleon's return from Elba, Labédoyère rallied his regiment to the emperor's cause. His influence inspired other army units to follow suit. He was recognized as a peer of France and promoted to Divisional General.

Waterloo and Downfall

Labédoyère fought at the Battle of Waterloo. He subsequently rushed to Paris, where he vehemently opposed the Bourbons in the Chamber of Peers on June 22. After the second Restoration, he planned to flee to America but was captured before he could do so.

Arrest and Execution

On August 2, 1815, Labédoyère was arrested and tried by a military court. Despite the defense presented by Benjamin Constant, he was condemned to death and executed by firing squad. He faced his death with remarkable fortitude.
