Early Life and Education
Charles Bernstein was born in New York City, USA. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College and his Master of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Academic Career
Bernstein has taught literature and comparative literature at various universities, including the State University of New York, Columbia University, Brown University, Princeton University, and the University of California, San Diego. Since 2003, he has been a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania.
Literary Works
Bernstein's first book, "Asylums," was published in 1975. He has since authored over 20 poetry collections and several essay collections. Additionally, he has written librettos for operas and musicals by composers such as Ben Yarmolinsky, Brian Ferneyhough, and Dean Drummond.
Anthology and Editing
Bernstein has edited several poetry anthologies and collections of essays on poetics. He is recognized as one of the most significant proponents of the "language poetry" movement.
