Biography of Charles Geschke

Charles Geschke, an American businessman, is best known for co-founding 'Adobe Systems Inc.' with John Warnock. This company specializes in developing software for graphic design and imaging. Born on September 11, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio, Geschke attended Saint Ignatius High School, a private Catholic school for boys. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Mathematics from Xavier University, and later received a doctorate in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University.

Founding Adobe Systems Inc.

Prior to the establishment of 'Adobe', Geschke and Warnock worked at 'Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center' (PARC). In the early 1970s, Geschke joined PARC and eventually organized and led a laboratory focused on computer science, graphics, optics, and image processing. It was during this time that he invited Warnock to join him in their research endeavors. Together, they developed PDL, a page description language that serves as a means for electronically describing complex shapes, such as fonts.

Unable to convince 'Xerox' management of the commercial value of the graphics language 'InterPress', Geschke and Warnock resigned and founded 'Adobe Systems'. Over time, 'InterPress' evolved into 'PostScript', which, in combination with 'Apple' computers, became the first desktop publishing system. This system allowed users to choose fonts, compose electronic documents on screens, and print them. 'PostScript' was platform-independent and highly flexible, giving it a competitive edge in the market. Geschke and Warnock's innovative approach launched an entire industry.

Role at Adobe

From December 1986 to July 1994, Geschke served as the Chief Operating Officer of 'Adobe', and from April 1989 to April 2000, he was the company's president. He stepped down as president in 2000, shortly before Warnock resigned as CEO. Additionally, Geschke served on the board of 'Adobe' from September 1997.

Recognition and Contributions

In 2010, 'Adobe' ranked 1069th on the 'Forbes Global 2000' list, and a year prior, it was listed on the 'Forbes List of 400 Best Big Companies'. In 1999, Charles Geschke became a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), an international computing society. He was also recognized by the Computer History Museum in 2002 for his contributions to commercializing desktop publishing systems and innovation in computer graphics and printing.

In October 2006, Geschke and Warnock were awarded the 'Annual Medal of Achievement Award' by the American Electronics Association (AEA). Geschke received the 'Computer Entrepreneur Award' from the IEEE Computer Society in 2008, and in 2009, he was honored with the National Medal of Technology by President Barack Obama.

Personal Life and Philanthropy

In 1964, Geschke married Nan Geschke, and they are still married today. They have children and grandchildren. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Geschke serves on the boards of various organizations, including the San Francisco Symphony, Commonwealth Club of California, and Tableau Software. He is a member of the advisory board for computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as the Egan Maritime Foundation and Nantucket Boys and Girls Club. Geschke has been a member of the National Academy of Engineering since 1995 and was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008. In 2010, he concluded his tenure as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the University of San Francisco.
