Charles Franklin Kettering was born on August 29, 1876, in Loudonville, Ohio, as the fourth of five children. Despite severe vision problems from a young age, he pursued higher education and initially taught at Bunker Hill High School.

In 1904, Kettering earned a degree in electrical engineering from Ohio State University. He joined National Cash Register's laboratory, where he obtained 23 patents in five years. His success stemmed from hard work and the belief that "the harder you work, the more you get out of it."

On August 1, 1905, Kettering married Olive Williams Ashland. They had one son, Eugene Williams Kettering. In 1914, Kettering built "Ridgeleigh Terrace," the first home in the United States with electric air conditioning.

Kettering passed away on November 24 or 25, 1958.
