Lotte's Inspiration

Encounter at the Ball

In 1772, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe attended a dance in Wetzlar, hosted by his great-aunt. There, he met Charlotte Buff, the aunt of his friend Johann Heinrich Buff. Goethe was immediately captivated by Charlotte's appearance and vivacity, leading to a whirlwind evening of dancing.

Separation and Marriage

In 1773, Charlotte wed and moved to Hanover. Despite their separation, they maintained correspondence, including Charlotte's request for Goethe's support for her son, August Kestner, a diplomat.

Reunion in Weimar

In 1816, Charlotte Kestner visited Weimar, where her younger sister resided, and met with Goethe. However, the reunion was brief and distant. This encounter became the subject of Thomas Mann's novel "Lotte in Weimar" and the eponymous 1974 film starring Lilli Palmer.
