Biography of Charlotte Cushman

Charlotte Cushman was a famous American actress, whose popularity peaked during the second half of the 19th century. She was born on July 23, 1816, in Boston, Massachusetts. From an early age, Charlotte, a talented young lady with a musical gift, tried to convince her mother that art was her future. Initially, her persuasions were in vain, but eventually, her mother realized the importance of Charlotte's comprehensive education, including music.

Acting Career

Throughout her life, Charlotte aspired to have an acting career and began pursuing her dreams as she grew older. She made her debut on the theater stage in Boston in 1835, performing in the play "The Marriage of Figaro." Soon after, in 1836, she achieved success in New Orleans and later in New York, in the play "Lady Macbeth." Around the same time, Charlotte's younger sister, Susan, also joined the theatrical stage, forming an excellent duo with Charlotte, most notably in their performance of "Romeo and Juliet."

International Success

In 1843, Charlotte embarked on a tour abroad. She then played on the London theater stage with great success. Five years into her successful career, Charlotte met Matilda Hays, and they eventually formed a happy couple. The two women lived together for ten years. In 1849, Charlotte returned to America and decided to leave the stage a few years later to travel to Italy with Hays.

Troubled Relationship and Final Years

In Italy, their relationship began to deteriorate, with constant disagreements and accusations of infidelity. Ultimately, their disputes led to the end of their relationship, and the two lovers parted ways for good. Charlotte then embarked on a short tour in the United States before returning to Italy and giving a farewell performance. During this time, Charlotte was already suffering from a serious illness.

Illness and Death

In 1869, she successfully underwent treatment for breast cancer. After her recovery, the actress was able to live for another six years. Charlotte passed away from pneumonia in Boston in 1876, at the age of 59, and was buried in one of the cemeteries in Cambridge. In 1915, her contributions to the performing arts were recognized, and her name was included in the Hall of Fame at New York University.

Charlotte Cushman's legacy remains in the memory of theater art enthusiasts to this day.
