Early Life and Cultural RevolutionChen Kaige, a prominent Chinese film director, was born into a family deeply rooted in the film industry. His father, Chen Huaiai, was a renowned director, and his mother, Shang Hua, was a celebrated actress. During the tumultuous Cultural Revolution, Chen joined the Red Guards, a radical group of young people who enforced Mao Zedong's policies.
Education and Debut
After the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1978, Chen enrolled in the Beijing Film Academy, where he studied alongside Zhang Yimou, another renowned Chinese filmmaker. He graduated in 1982 and made his directorial debut with "Yellow Earth" (1984), a critically acclaimed film that earned him international recognition.
International Breakthrough
Chen's breakthrough came with "Farewell My Concubine" (1993), a historical epic that won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as a BAFTA award. This film marked a significant turning point in Chen's career, establishing him as a prominent figure in international cinema.
