Chie Mihara: Japanese Designer with Brazilian Roots

Chie Mihara, a Japanese designer of Brazilian descent, has carved a niche for herself in the world of footwear. In 2002, she launched her eponymous shoe line, Chie Mihara, in Elda, Spain.

Early Life and Education

Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1968, Chie Mihara is the second of three daughters to Japanese parents. She lived in Fukuoka, Japan from the age of 18 to 22, where she studied fashion design at the private college Kyushu Design Gakkuin. During this time, she also worked as an assistant to the renowned designer Junko Koshino.

International Influences

At the age of 22, Mihara relocated to New York City, where she enrolled in the Accessory Design program at the Fashion Institute of Technology, focusing on handbag and footwear design. Her practical experience grew as she worked at Eneslow, an orthopedic shoe store, where she gained insights into foot structure and common foot problems. She later joined Sam & Libby, a New York-based women's shoe brand, designing both shoes and handbags.

Establishment of Chie Mihara

At the age of 27, Mihara settled in Elda, Spain, where she worked on a luxury shoe line for designer Charles Jourdan. In 2002, at the age of 29, she launched Chie Mihara with a vision to provide women with something different – "shoes designed by women for women," that seamlessly blended comfort and style.

Design Philosophy

Drawing inspiration from fashion influences of the past, from the feminine 1930s to the playful 1980s, Mihara studied historical shoemaking techniques and reimagined them with a modern aesthetic and contemporary flair. Her unique approach to design and her ability to combine comfort with style quickly gained global recognition.

International Success

Chie Mihara's footwear is now sold in over 1,000 boutiques worldwide, including Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus in the United States, Selfridges in England, Isetan in Japan, and Le Bon Marché in Paris. Each pair of Chie Mihara shoes comes with anatomical insoles specially designed to accommodate the female foot structure.

Cultural Influences

In her designs, Mihara deftly weaves together her experiences from living in different countries. Brazil infuses her creations with femininity, while Japan shapes her approach to design. The United States contributes practicality, and Spain provides her with an understanding of shoe construction that has further refined her craft.
