Early Career and Formula BMW

Kristian Bakkervrud began his racing career in Formula BMW, where he competed from 2002 to 2004. After two seasons in the German series, he moved to the British version in 2004.

British Formula 3 and Macau

Bakkervrud progressed to British Formula 3 in 2005 and 2006. He finished seventh in the championship in 2005 and improved to sixth in 2006, also earning his first victory in the series. Additionally, the Dane competed in the Macau Grand Prix and the Formula 3 Masters.

GP2 Disappointment

Bakkervrud entered the 2007 GP2 season with DPR team, partnering Spaniard Andy Soucek. The season proved to be a disappointment, as Bakkervrud failed to score any points. He also experienced back pain, aggravated by nerve damage sustained in two racing incidents.

Super Nova and Continued Pain

He moved to the Super Nova team for the 2008 GP2 Asia season, where he continued his streak of misfortune, retiring from all but three races. He remained in GP2 for the 2008 season, but the back pain returned after a collision with Ben Hanley in the first race. Soucek took over his seat while he recovered, and Bakkervrud returned at Monte Carlo after missing the Istanbul round. He crashed in the Monaco sprint race, landing heavily after a collision with Kamui Kobayashi. The landing did not aggravate his back pain. However, the injury flared up during preseason testing, forcing Bakkervrud to withdraw from GP2 on medical advice. Soucek replaced him for the remainder of the season.

DTM

In 2009, Bakkervrud joined the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters series with Futurecom-TME, driving a two-year-old Audi A4.
