Johann Christoph Adelung

Johann Christoph Adelung was a German literary historian and lexicographer.

Early Life and Career

In 1719, Adelung became the editor of the Leipzig newspaper "Acta Eruditorum." In 1740, he renamed the publication to "Zuverl?ssige Nachrichten von dem gegenw?rtigen Zustande, Ver?nderung und Wachsthum der Wissenschaften."

Professor and Librarian at Leipzig University

From 1732, Adelung served as a professor of history at Leipzig University. In 1742, he became the university's librarian.

"Allgemeines Gelehrten-Lexicon"

Adelung's most significant work is the "Allgemeines Gelehrten-Lexicon" (Universal Dictionary of Scholars). Published in Leipzig from 1750 to 1751, it contained information on over 60,000 authors.

Legacy of Adelung's "Gelehrten-Lexicon"

Adelung's dictionary served as the foundation for similar publications for over half a century. It was expanded by Johann Gottlieb Dunkel (1755-1760), Johann Christoph Adelung (1784-1787), and finally Heinrich Wilhelm Rotermund (1810-1822).
