German amateur fisherman catches nearly 200kg halibut

German fisherman from North Friesland, 45-year-old Christian Johannsen, seems to have caught the biggest fish of his life. He caught a massive 2-meter long halibut weighing 194kg. The gigantic fish surrendered to Johannsen after a four-hour epic battle in the Barents Sea off the coast of Norway. Christian, a bank employee, says, "Every fisherman dreams of this. It's like winning the lottery."

A legendary fishing experience

The amateur angler barely managed to pull the fish onto his tiny boat, with the help of his two friends. When the monster halibut was brought ashore, it was measured, weighed, and then cut and divided among the fishermen. Johannsen's wife shared that her husband couldn't lift his arms for two days after this legendary fishing experience. Christian himself told 'Die Welt', "Oh, my wife will get a big piece."

Why the halibut had to be cut?

Johannsen also explained why they had to cut the halibut before heading home, saying, "There was no way we could fit it on the plane, and the pilot would have looked quite strange if we brought 200kg of halibut on board." By the way, the current record for the largest halibut catch is held by a 70-year-old retiree, Gunther Hansel. His fish, caught in Icelandic waters, weighed over 215kg. He managed to overcome the giant in just two hours, with the help of five crew members.
