Early Life and Education

Christine "Chryssie" Goulandris was born into wealth and privilege as the daughter of John and Maria Goulandris, members of prominent Greek shipping families. She spent her early childhood in the United States but frequently visited Greece, where her family owned properties on the island of Andros. After her father's untimely death when she was three years old, Chryssie pursued her education at the Sorbonne in Paris, studying French culture and art history.

Return to New York and Business Career

Upon her return to New York, Chryssie joined her family's extensive business empire, taking on responsibilities ranging from overseeing horse breeding operations to trading precious metals. Her shrewd business acumen and extensive connections played a significant role in the success of her family's ventures.

Marriage to Tony O'Reilly

In 1989, Chryssie met media mogul and industrialist Tony O'Reilly during a business trip to New York. They began dating and became a couple, eventually marrying in 1994 in a lavish ceremony in the Bahamas. Tony had previously been married, and at the time of their wedding, his net worth was estimated at $520 million, while Chryssie's fortune was valued at approximately $450 million.

Equestrian Pursuits and Horse Breeding

Chryssie Goulandris is an avid equestrian and horse breeder. Together with her husband, she owns and operates Castlemartin Stud, a renowned thoroughbred breeding and training enterprise with operations in Ireland, England, Normandy, and the United States. She inherited her passion for horses from her family, with several of her uncles having been involved in horse racing. Her first racehorse purchase was in 1978, and by 2006, she owned over 100 horses in various stages of training and 128 broodmares.

Corporate Positions and Charitable Work

In addition to her equestrian pursuits, Chryssie has held several corporate positions. She served as a director of Waterford Wedgwood plc from 1994 to 2009 and headed the company's museum trust until 2007, remaining an honorary member. She is also the chairwoman of the O'Reilly Foundation, a charitable organization founded by her husband in 1998.
