Cynthia Horvat, a 45-year-old teacher, gained nationwide "fame" in 2008 when she was arrested on charges of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. During the police investigation, it was revealed that Cynthia had been involved in a sexual relationship with one of her students from June to September 2008. The student's name was not disclosed, and no one at the educational institution suspected their relationship.

At the time, Cynthia Horvat was married and had four children, some of whom attended Warner Christian Academy in South Daytona, Florida, where she taught English. After the scandal began to unfold, Horvat was fired from the educational institution, and she was soon charged with lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor. Horvat's defense insisted that her hormones had surged and emphasized her somewhat unstable mental health. However, she faced a potential sentence of 15 years in prison. Medical records were presented to the court, demonstrating a serious hormonal imbalance in Cynthia's body, which could have been caused by either menopause or an ovarian cyst.

Ultimately, on February 27, 2009, Cynthia Horvat was found guilty, sentenced to one year of house arrest, and given seven years of probation. She was labeled a sex offender, which subjected her to constant scrutiny by authorities and eliminated any possibility of returning to teaching. Additionally, she was no longer allowed to drive alone or interact with minors, excluding her own children.

However, in April, Horvat was arrested again for violating the prohibition on communicating with minors. Police proved that she had been communicating on the social media platform Facebook with a 16-year-old teenager, who was actually an undercover police officer, and attempting to establish contact with him. On May 13, 2009, Chief Circuit Judge David Walsh ruled that Cynthia Horvat's communication on the social network was unintentional and did not violate the previous court order. Cynthia returned home and continued to serve her one-year house arrest.
