Biography of Claire McCardell
Claire McCardell, an American fashion designer, was born on May 24, 1905, in Frederick, USA. She attended Hood College from 1923 to 1925 and then studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris until 1929. After completing her education, McCardell started working as a model and knitwear designer for Robert Turk, Inc. From 1931, she became a designer for Townley Frocks.
In 1938, Claire McCardell joined Hattie Carnegie, where she developed designs for women's clothing. In 1940, she began creating her own clothing designs for Townley Frocks under her own label. This collaboration continued for eighteen years. McCardell received the Mademoiselle Merit award in 1943 and the Coty American Fashion Critics award in the following year. She also received the Neiman Marcus award in 1948. In 1953, she showcased her works in a retrospective exhibition in Beverly Hills, USA.
In 1956, Claire McCardell launched a children's clothing line under her own label. She received the Coty American Fashion Critics award for the second time in 1958. The designer's style was always characterized by simplicity. Her simple yet functional women's designs appealed to many. Thus, many techniques and methods of cutting, sewing, and decorating dresses became the foundation of ready-to-wear clothing production in the future.
