Colby Coombs: Surviving the Impossible
The Devastating AscentIn 1992, seasoned mountaineer and National Outdoor Leadership School instructor Colby Coombs found himself in a harrowing encounter on Mount Foraker, Alaska. Along with companions Ritt Kellogg and Tom Walter, Coombs set out to chart a new route to the peak. However, severe weather conditions hampered their progress, taking three days to reach the summit.

As they approached the peak, a massive avalanche swept them 1,000 feet down the mountain. Coombs briefly witnessed the avalanche before losing consciousness.

Trapped and Desperate
Regaining consciousness, Coombs found himself suspended by a rope with severe injuries: two broken vertebrae in his neck, a fractured scapula, and a broken ankle. Tom Walter hung lifelessly nearby. With immense effort and overcoming excruciating pain, Coombs freed himself and began his descent.
On day two, he discovered Ritt's lifeless body. For the next four grueling days, Coombs descended the mountain with broken bones and unwavering determination. "I would just keep my eyes open and ignore the pain," he later recounted.
Rehabilitation and Reflection
After months of grueling rehabilitation, Coombs gradually regained his physical strength. During this time, he contemplated his harrowing experience and its lasting impact.
Today, as an instructor at the National Outdoor Leadership School, Coombs shares his story to teach wilderness survival. He emphasizes the importance of a strong will to survive rather than an exhaustive knowledge of outdoor skills.
'Turning Off' the Emotions
According to Coombs, it is impossible to anticipate every danger in the wilderness. Instead, he encourages students to "turn off" unnecessary emotions in extreme situations. Fear, loss, and pain can hinder decision-making, while focusing on survival and exploring potential escapes is crucial.
Remembering the Fallen
Coombs continues to honor the memory of his perished companions. Their sacrifice serves as a constant reminder of the risks and rewards of his chosen pursuit.
