Constance of Arles, Queen of France
Daughter of ProvenceConstance was born as the daughter of Count William I of Provence and Adelaide of Anjou. Her family held significant influence in southern France.
Marriage to King Robert II
In 1003, Constance married the pious King Robert II of France. His previous marriage to Bertha of Burgundy had been annulled due to consanguinity, and the Pope had excommunicated him for refusing to dissolve it. Constance's marriage brought stability to the kingdom and bolstered the royal authority.
A Contentious Reign
However, Constance's reign was marked by conflict. Her ambitious nature and lavish spending clashed with Robert's devout and generous disposition. She alienated the court with her intrigues and cruelty, and her attempts to undermine her stepchildren further divided the kingdom.
The Division of the Court
The court became divided between those who supported Constance and those who remained loyal to Bertha. Constance's eldest sons, Hugh Magnus and Henry, were forced to live as wandering knights due to her machinations.
Henry's Accession and Constance's Intrigues
Henry eventually reconciled with his father and was crowned co-king in 1027. Constance, determined to secure the throne for her younger son, Robert, incited a rebellion against Henry.
The Battle for the Throne
Henry was defeated and fled to Normandy for refuge. Supported by Duke Robert the Devil, Henry returned to Paris and reclaimed his kingdom. Constance's younger son renounced his claim to the throne in exchange for the duchy of Burgundy.
Exile and Death
Removed from court, Constance retired to the castle of Melun, where she died in 1032. She was buried at the Abbey of Saint Denis alongside her husband.
