Biography of Corrie Sanders
Corrie Sanders was born on July 1, 1966, in Johannesburg. He began boxing at the age of eight under the guidance of his father, who was also a professional boxer. During his fifteen-year amateur career, Corrie had 191 fights, winning 180 of them.
Boxing Career
Corrie Sanders displayed his talents not only in boxing but also in other sports. He was proficient in water skiing and played golf, even considering a career as a professional rugby player. However, he found his true calling in boxing. He became the South African champion seven times as an amateur, earning the prestigious right to represent the South African National Team from 1985 to 1989.
In his first professional fight on April 2, 1989, Sanders achieved a technical knockout in the first round against King Kong DuBile (0-2). In his eleventh fight, he won the title of South African champion by knocking out 25-year-old Johnny DuPlo (25-4-1, 20 KOs) in the first round. After twenty-three consecutive victories, sixteen of which were knockouts, Corrie faced 30-year-old Knight Tabb (12-1, 11 KOs), who knocked him out in the second round.
After nine consecutive wins over three years, Corrie defeated 31-year-old Ross "The Boss" Purrity (23-10-1, 21 KOs) by unanimous decision on November 15, 1997, winning the vacant WBU world title. In his next three fights, Sanders successfully defended his championship belt, defeating Bob "Matinee Idol" Chuzanov (44-7, 28 KOs) by technical knockout in the second round on July 12, 1998; Jorge Valdes (22-4-2, 16 KOs) by technical knockout in the first round on July 2, 1999; and former IBF world champion in the cruiserweight division Alfred "Ice" Cole (31-4-1, 16 KOs) by technical knockout in the first round on February 19, 2000.
However, on May 20, 2000, Corrie lost his championship title by technical knockout in the seventh round to Hasim "The Rock" Rahman (32-2, 27 KOs). He made his comeback on November 3, 2001, defeating Michael Schutte (15-3, 7 KOs) by technical knockout in the first round. On November 9, 2002, Sanders defeated former WBF American champion and former WBF intercontinental champion Otis Tisdale (20-7-1, 16 KOs) by technical knockout in the second round.
Victory over Vladimir Klitschko
On March 9, fate presented 37-year-old veteran Corrie Sanders with a grandiose surprise. He entered the ring as an obvious underdog against WBO champion Vladimir Klitschko. Sanders shocked the world by knocking Klitschko down four times, ultimately winning the WBO Heavyweight title. He returned to Africa with the championship belt.
