Biography of Crystal Lynn Lewis
Crystal Lynn Lewis is an American singer known for her contemporary Christian music and gospel genres. She was born on September 11, 1969, in Corona, California. Growing up, Lewis sang in her father's church.
In 1984, at the age of 15, Lewis auditioned for a children's Christian musical called "Hi-Tops" (1985), created by Ernie and Debbie Retino. She landed the lead role in the production and also participated in the studio recording of the soundtrack. During her time with "Hi-Tops," Lewis met members of the rockabilly group "The Lifters." She became friends with them and eventually joined the band, which later changed its name to "Wild Blue Yonder." In 1986, they released a self-titled album under the "Frontline Records" label, produced by Terry Scott Taylor of "Daniel Amos."
After "Wild Blue Yonder" disbanded, Lewis signed a solo contract with "Frontline Records" at the age of 17. Her debut album, "Beyond The Charade," was released in 1987. She went on to release three more albums with "Frontline," including "Joy" in 1988, "Let Love In" in 1990, and her first greatest hits compilation, "Simply The Best," in 1991. In 1992, Lewis started her own label called "Metro 1 Music" and signed a distribution deal with "Diamante Music Group."
In 1992, Lewis ventured into television and became part of the original cast of the teen sketch show "Roundhouse" on Nickelodeon. She wrote the theme song for the show but left after the first season to focus on her music career. Her next solo projects included the albums "Remember" in 1992, "The Bride" in 1993, and "Hymns: My Life" in 1995. "The Bride" was recognized as one of the top 100 Christian albums in the book "CCM Presents: The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music" published in 2001.
In 1995, Lewis released her second greatest hits album, which featured the hit song "Shine Jesus Shine," making her a notable figure in pop and dance music charts. Her first gold-certified album, "Beauty For Ashes," was released in 1996, and the song "People Get Ready... Jesus Is Comin'" won Song of the Year on Christian Radio. The album also received an ASCAP Award in the following year. In 1998, Lewis released "Gold," which included two chart-topping songs, "Lord, I Believe in You" and "Not the Same." Both albums sold close to a million copies, bringing Lewis both fame and commercial success.
In 2000, Lewis's project "Fearless" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Pop Album, and her first Christmas album, "Holiday! A Collection of Christmas Classics," ranked 5th on the "CCM Magazine" list of the best Christian albums of all time. In 2001, she released her third compilation album, "More," followed by the live concert project "More Live" in 2002, recorded in Anaheim, California. She also released a collection of gospel hymns and standards called "Holy, Holy, Holy."
In 2005, Lewis released the album "See," followed by a children's music album titled "Joyful Noise (Songs For Kids!)" in 2006. In 2009, she released her last project, a Christmas album called "Peace on Earth," exclusively available on iTunes. Currently, Lewis is working on a new album. She resides in northwest Montana with her husband, Brian Ray, and their children Solomon Ray and Isabella Ray, along with several pets.
