Biography of Daniel Camargo Barbosa
Daniel Camargo Barbosa was a Colombian serial killer and psychopath who is believed to have raped and murdered over 150 girls and young women in Colombia and Ecuador during the 1970s and 1980s.

Early Life
Daniel Camargo Barbosa was born on January 22, 1930, in Colombia, South America. His mother died when he was a young boy, and his authoritarian father showed him no affection. Barbosa grew up with a cruel stepmother who abused him and sometimes dressed him in women's clothing, making him a target for ridicule.
Criminal Activities
In May 1958, Barbosa found himself in prison in Bogota, Colombia, for petty theft. He was in a common-law marriage with a woman named Alcira and had two children. However, he fell in love with another woman named Esperanza and made a deal with her that he would not leave her if she helped him find virgins to sleep with. This marked the beginning of their criminal partnership.
Esperanza became Barbosa's accomplice, luring young girls to their apartment under false pretenses and drugging them so that Barbosa could rape them. Although Barbosa raped five girls, he did not kill any of them. The fifth victim revealed what had happened to her, leading to the arrest of Barbosa and Esperanza. They were kept in separate cells.
In April 1964, Barbosa was convicted of sexual assault in Colombia and sentenced to three years in prison. However, a new judge later increased the sentence to eight years, which angered Barbosa. After serving his full term, Barbosa became a street vendor. One day, while passing a school, he kidnapped a 9-year-old girl, raped her, and killed her to prevent her from reporting him to the police.
Barbosa was arrested on May 3, 1974, in Barranquilla, Colombia. Though he was believed to have killed over 80 girls and young women in Colombia, he was only charged with the sexual assault and murder of a 9-year-old girl and received a 30-year prison sentence. His sentence was later reduced to 25 years, and he was interned on Gorgona Island on December 24, 1977.
Escape and Continued Crimes
In November 1984, Barbosa escaped from the island by studying ocean currents and using a simple boat. Authorities believed he had died at sea, and the media reported that he had been eaten by sharks. However, Barbosa arrived in Quito, Ecuador, and took a bus to Guayaquil on December 5 or 6, 1984. On December 18, he kidnapped another 9-year-old girl from Quevedo. Another 10-year-old girl disappeared the following day. From 1984 to 1986, Barbosa committed at least 54 rapes and murders in Guayaquil.
Barbosa targeted vulnerable, young girls from lower-class backgrounds who were looking for work. He posed as a foreigner and lured them to accompany him to find a Protestant pastor in a church on the outskirts of the city. Barbosa pretended to be carrying a large sum of money, which he showed to the girls as proof, and offered them a reward for accompanying him on the journey. Nobody suspected the elderly man, and it seemed like his granddaughter was accompanying him. He would lead the girls into the woods, claiming to be taking a shortcut, and if they became suspicious, he did not stop them from leaving. However, he would rape and sometimes stab or strangle the others who resisted. He would then dispose of their bodies in the forest.
Arrest and Imprisonment
On February 26, 1986, Barbosa was apprehended by two police officers in Quito, shortly after he had killed a 9-year-old girl named Elizabeth. The patrolling officers found him suspicious and were shocked to discover a bag containing the bloodied clothes of his latest victim. This scene resembled a scene from Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel "Crime and Punishment." The criminal was arrested and taken to Guayaquil for identification. He initially identified himself as Manuel Solis Bulgari, but one of his surviving victims later recognized him.
Barbosa calmly confessed to killing 71 girls and young women in Ecuador after his escape from prison. He led the authorities to the dismembered bodies of his victims, which they were previously unaware of. Barbosa showed no remorse and shared details of his sadism. After raping the girls, he would chop and mutilate their bodies with a machete. When asked why he targeted girls and young women, he callously stated that he liked virgins "because they scream."
Death
In 1989, Barbosa was sentenced to only 16 years in prison, the maximum punishment in Ecuador. He served his sentence at Garcia Moreno de Quito prison. During his imprisonment, he claimed to have converted to Christianity. Pedro Alonso Lopez, another serial killer who is believed to have raped and murdered over 300 girls and young women in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, was serving his sentence alongside Barbosa.
According to reports, Barbosa was killed in prison in November 1994 by Luis Masache Narvaez, a cousin of one of Barbosa's victims.
