Daniel Glattauer: Austrian Author and Journalist

Born in Vienna in 1960, Daniel Glattauer is an Austrian writer and journalist. He is best known for his novel "Gut gegen Nordwind" ("Love Virtually"), which has been translated into 32 languages and sold over 850,000 copies in Austria alone.

Early Life and Education

Glattauer attended high school in Vienna and went on to study pedagogy and art history at the University of Vienna from 1979 to 1985.

Journalism Career

After graduating, Glattauer worked for three years as a journalist for the newspaper "Die Presse." From 1989 to 2009, he was an editor for "Der Standard," where he was responsible for court reporting and the feuilleton section.

Literary Breakthrough

Glattauer's breakthrough came with the publication of "Love Virtually" in 2006. The novel tells the story of a lonely man named Leo and a married woman named Emmi who develop a virtual relationship through email. The book was nominated for the German Book Prize in 2006.

"Love Virtually" Adaptations

"Love Virtually" has been adapted for the stage and screen. The stage version premiered in September 2007 and has been performed in over 40 theaters worldwide. In 2010, two film adaptations of the novel were released.

Humor and Satire

In addition to his novels, Glattauer is known for his humorous and satirical writing. He has published several collections of short stories and essays, including "Mama, jetzt nicht!" and "Die Ameisenzählung."
