Biography of Daniel Camargo

Daniel Camargo, a Colombian preacher, committed his horrifying crimes for over 15 years. Thirty women and girls fell victim to his unrestrained sexual fantasies, being raped and sadistically tortured. Camargo himself confessed during the investigation that he "chose only young, beautiful women and school-age girls." Despite arriving in Ecuador in the late 1970s as a religious preacher, Camargo became known to the world not as a missionary spreading notions of goodness and justice, but as a horrible maniac and murderer.

Crimes and Confession

Camargo, the Colombian preacher, committed his terrifying crimes for over 15 years. Thirty women and girls became victims of his uncontrolled sexual fantasies, being raped and sadistically tortured. During the investigation, Camargo confessed, stating that he specifically targeted young, beautiful women and school-age girls. His guilt was fully proven, and he provided precise information about the burial sites of most of his victims.

Question of Mental Sanity

Naturally, during Camargo's trial, the question of his mental sanity was raised. After extensive examinations, the president of the psychiatric board in Ecuador, who performed an evaluation of the criminal, characterized him as a sane, cold-blooded, and cruel individual. Special attention was given to the fact that his own mother, who was a prostitute, likely influenced the development of Camargo's sadistic tendencies. In Ecuadorian legislation, there is no death penalty, and the maximum punishment is 16 years of imprisonment. Camargo was sentenced to this term.

Vigilante Justice

However, some Ecuadorians believed that Camargo received too lenient a punishment for his horrifying crimes. To restore justice, one of them decided to take matters into their own hands and deal with the imprisoned maniac themselves. Additionally, the decision to carry out vigilante justice was prompted by the news that the most bloodthirsty "Jack the Ripper" of Latin America, nicknamed the "Andean Monster," Alfonso Lopez, who was also Colombian and had violated and killed 100 schoolgirls in Ecuador, had recently been released after serving his 16-year sentence and returned to Colombia. Daniel Camargo did not escape retribution – he was killed in his own cell in a prison in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito.

According to one version, he was murdered by a relative of one of the maniac's victims, who intentionally committed a minor crime to enter the prison and deal with him. Anticipating the subsequent events, one of the judges remarked during the trial, "He'll be lucky if he stays alive here. People have a special attitude towards killers of minors."
