Biography of Danny Dayton
Danny Dayton, born Daniel David Segall in 1923 in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA, was an American actor who pursued his profession after serving in the military, during which his performing talent emerged. He participated in division amateur performances and decided to seek work on Broadway after his military service. His first stage works were the plays 'High Button Shoes' and 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum'.
Early Career
Danny Dayton made his screen debut in the 1950s and went on to have a long career in film and television, appearing in over 80 films. He first appeared on screen in an episode of the series 'The Arrow Show' in 1949. Initially, Dayton's roles were often small, and sometimes his name did not even appear in the end credits.
Stage and Film Success
In 1950, Dayton landed a role in the comedic war musical 'At War with the Army' directed by Hal Walker, portraying various "military" characters in a remote border garrison. He starred alongside Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra in the 1955 comedy musical 'Guys and Dolls' directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, set in 1920s New York.
Throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, Dayton had numerous television roles. He appeared in series such as 'All in the Family', 'Sanford and Son', 'Barnaby Jones', 'Charlie's Angels', 'Dallas', and many others. His most popular character on television was Hank Pivnik from the series 'All in the Family'.
Later Career and Death
In 1991, Dayton joined the cast of Mel Brooks' comedy film 'Life Stinks', and three years later, in 1994, he appeared in Tim Burton's biographical film 'Ed Wood'. In 'Ed Wood', a film about the life of Hollywood director Ed Wood, Dayton acted alongside Johnny Depp and Martin Landau, both of whom received nominations and awards for their roles. Although Dayton did not receive any awards himself, the film added to his acclaimed filmography.
It is known that Dayton was also a successful director of commercials. His last on-camera work was in the series 'Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane', with an episode featuring him released in 1999.
Danny Dayton passed away on February 6, 1999, in Los Angeles, California, due to emphysema.
