Biography of Danny Gottlieb

Early Life and Education

Danny Gottlieb was born on April 18, 1953. He graduated from the University of Miami in 1975. During his studies, he received private training from renowned drummers such as Joe Morello, Mel Lewis, Ed Soph, Gary Chester, Bob Moses, and Jack DeJohnette.

Professional Career

Throughout his career, Gottlieb has collaborated with numerous bands and artists, including the Jeff Berlin Trio, Gary Burton Quartet, Stan Getz Quintet, Pat Metheny Group, Gil Evans Orchestra, and Bobby McFerrin Trio. He has also performed and recorded with Sting, David Byrne, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Wayne Shorter, Kenny Barron, Branford Marsalis, and many others. To date, Gottlieb has played on over 300 albums, and five of his recordings have won Grammy Awards.

Recordings and Projects

As a leading musician, Gottlieb has released five solo albums. He has also collaborated with Mark Egan in the jazz fusion ensemble "Elements," releasing nine albums, and with Pete Levin, recording two albums. Additionally, Gottlieb has released three albums as part of the trio "Contempo," featuring Mark Soskin and Chip Jackson.

Current Activities

Currently, Gottlieb is the drummer for the Lt. Dan Band, a cover group founded by Gary Sinise and Kimo Williams. He is also involved in testing drum kits and percussion instruments for companies such as Zildjian, Remo, Basix Drums, Hot Sticks, Rhythm Tech Percussion, LP Percussion, and Eames Drum Shells. Gottlieb has recorded ten instructional DVDs with Mel Bay, including three with his mentor, jazz drummer Joe Morello.

Teaching and Personal Life

Gottlieb is a member of the jazz music faculty at the University of North Florida, where he teaches jazz artistry as an assistant professor. He is married to Beth Raddock Gottlieb, who also plays in Gary Sinise's band. In addition to his teaching career, Beth teaches percussion instruments at the University of Alabama's School of Music.
