Danny Sugerman, born in 1954 in Santa Monica, California, is best known as the manager and biographer of the rock band "The Doors". His entire life revolved around the band, as he served as their impresario, wrote multiple books about Jim Morrison and the group as a whole, promoted and explored their creativity. Danny was always by the side of "The Doors" and was the most devoted fan of Morrison, romanticizing and idolizing him until the musician's death.
Early Life and Introduction to Music
Danny Sugerman first became involved with musicians at the age of twelve. After Jim Morrison's death in 1971, Danny remained with the band, becoming the manager for guitarist Robby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and drummer John Densmore.
Author and Biographer
In 1980, Danny Sugerman collaborated with journalist Jerry Hopkins to release the canonical biography of "The Doors" frontman, titled "No One Here Gets Out Alive". While the authors added romance and significance to their protagonist, the book was a meticulous and extensive account of Jim Morrison's complex and often tumultuous life. The biography portrayed Morrison as a true fighter, rebel, and rock legend.
The book gained significant attention, leading to plans for a film adaptation. Directors such as Brian De Palma, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, and Francis Ford Coppola expressed interest in the project. Ultimately, Oliver Stone directed the film, which later became a cult classic.
In 1983, Danny released the band biography "The Doors" and later an illustrated version titled "The Doors, the Illustrated History". In 1989, he published his autobiography, "Wonderland Avenue: Tales of Glamour and Excess", which revealed his own struggles with heroin addiction and overcoming it. Additionally, Sugerman wrote about another legendary band, "Guns N' Roses", in his book "Appetite For Destruction: The Days Of Guns N' Roses", released in 1991.
Legacy
Danny Sugerman also worked with Iggy Pop, serving as the producer for his song "Repo Man". He passed away on January 5, 2005, due to lung cancer. He is buried at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
