Daryl Braithwaite, an Australian pop singer, rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the band "Sherbet" and established himself as a talented solo artist. He achieved success with 15 of his singles reaching the Top 40 in the Australian charts, two of which, "You're My World" and "The Horses," reached the number one spot.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, Daryl grew up in a working-class family. He developed an interest in music at a young age and sang in his school choir. In 1963, his family moved to the beachside suburb of Coogee in Sydney. Daryl continued his education for a while before pursuing an apprenticeship in a metalwork shop, which he completed in 1969. However, he had little interest in pursuing a career in that field, which led him to leave home and pursue a career in music.
As a teenager, Daryl played in several rock bands in Sydney. In 1967, he sang for "Bright Lights" and later joined "House of Bricks" and "Samuel Lilith." In 1971, Daryl joined the band "Sherbet" and quickly became their unofficial leader after the departure of their original lead vocalist, Dennis Laughlin. The band released their first single before Daryl joined them, but it was on their second record, "Can You Feel It Baby," that Daryl's vocals truly shone. Despite the stylistic differences between Daryl's soulful singing and the band's pop sound, they created a unique blend. From 1971 to 1979, the band released 19 hit songs, reaching the peak of their popularity in the mid-70s, with Daryl being particularly beloved by listeners.
While working with Sherbet, Daryl also pursued a solo career. In 1973, he played the lead role in the Australian production of the rock opera "Tommy," and a year later, he officially began performing as a solo artist. His repertoire mainly consisted of cover versions of popular pop and rock songs, with original compositions being relatively rare. Up until 1978, he released only singles, but in 1978, he released his first LP and a full-length album in the following year. By that time, Sherbet had already disbanded, and it seemed like Daryl would be able to focus entirely on his solo career. However, in 1980, former Sherbet members reunited to form "The Sherbs," and Daryl temporarily put his solo performances on hold. Unfortunately, the new project did not achieve much success, and the band disbanded in 1984.
Daryl continued to perform at various rock concerts throughout the country before leaving the music industry in 1987 to pursue civilian employment. He returned to music a year later, and his new compositions showcased a more mature sound compared to his work with Sherbet. He quickly regained success in the Australian charts. By the end of 1991, his album "Rise" became the best-selling album of the year in Australia, and his previous release, "Edge," had already become the most successful album ever released by Sony Music Australia at the time. Daryl continues to perform successfully, albeit with occasional breaks, to this day. His latest album, "The Lemon Tree," was released in 2008, and there is currently no information available about new records.
