Biography of Dave Grusin

Dave Grusin is a jazz musician who has excelled as a pianist, producer, composer, arranger, and orchestral leader. His piano playing encompasses a wide range, and he is talented in creating music for film and television.

Early Years and Education

During his time at the University of Colorado, Grusin played with Terry Gibbs and Johnny Smith. He served as the assistant music director and pianist in Andy Williams' orchestra from 1959 to 1966.

Music Career

In 1960, Grusin participated in recordings with Benny Goodman, and in the early 1960s, he played in a hard bop trio that included Milt Hinton and Don Lamond. He also played on various sessions with the quintet featuring Thad Jones and Frank Foster.

In the early 1970s, Grusin wrote arrangements and recorded with Sarah Vaughan, Quincy Jones, and Carmen McRae. In the mid-1970s, he played on electric keyboards with Gerry Mulligan and Lee Ritenour. He later played a significant role in the establishment of the GRP Records studio, which evolved into one of the most innovative jazz and fusion companies.

From the 1980s to the 1990s, Grusin continued his studio practice, undertaking numerous projects ranging from fusion to symphonic music. He also led the GRP big bands, composed music for films such as "The Fabulous Baker Boys," and organized duo sessions with his brother, Don Grusin, and jazz-rock guitarist Lee Ritenour.

In addition to his countless GRP releases, Grusin also recorded at Columbia, Sheffield Lab, and Polygram studios. In September 2000, Grusin and Lee Ritenour celebrated the release of their joint album "Two Worlds" in a unique way. A webcast was organized for the album's presentation party, hosted by film director Sydney Pollack at Ritenour's home in Malibu, California. The duo was joined by a 20-piece ensemble, performing material from the album. The recorded music ranged from contemporary jazz to a selection of classical works.
