Biography of David Gray

David Gray, a singer and composer, was nominated for a Grammy as the best "new artist," which he ironically comments on (after 4 albums and almost 10 years of active touring, this does indeed seem strange). Born in Manchester in 1970, David Gray moved with his parents to Wales as a schoolboy, where he finished school and later attended the University of Liverpool. During his college years, he began playing in various punk bands and writing songs himself, although in a slightly different style. He later moved to London, where he managed to sign contracts with the British label Hut Records and the American Caroline, and at the end of 1992, he released his debut single "Birds Without Wings," tracks from which would later appear on his first and second albums.

David Gray recorded his second album while already under contract with Virgin, but he faced a lot of problems and restrictions in addition to it. The new bosses sought to control his every move, not intending to release singles, which made it difficult to promote the album and the singer's creativity as a whole. And although "Flesh" was well received by fans, the singer himself was quite skeptical of it and now says that he would change a lot. Alongside bassist David Nolte, drummer Clune also participated in the recording, a loyal friend and collaborator of Gray's (and since then, a co-author), possessing a terrific sense of humor and the ability to excite the audience during concerts.

The American tour with Radiohead in 1995, as well as performances with Dave Matthews and Shawn Colvin, were quite successful, especially in America, where the audience had the opportunity to get acquainted with Gray's work for the first time. "White Ladder" was released in 1999 and to this day has gone "gold" in Austria, Italy, and South Africa, "platinum" in New Zealand, Singapore, and the US, 7 times "platinum" in the UK (with over 2.2 million copies sold and over 100 weeks in the top 40) and 14 times (!!!) in Ireland (175 weeks on the charts and the best-selling album of all time, excluding compilations).

In the spring and fall of 2001, Gray recorded a new album, "A New Day at Midnight," in his home studio, which was released in the fall of 2002.
