From Gardener to Cancer Survivor: David Histon's Transformation

A Mistaken Insect Bite

66-year-old David Histon, a former gardener from Redditch, England, initially dismissed a mark on his nose as an insect bite. However, when the spot persisted and grew, he sought medical attention.

The Diagnosis

A biopsy at Worcestershire Royal Hospital revealed a 1.3 cm tumor that had spread to Histon's nasal cavity and eye socket. The tumor was so large that surgeons had to delay their lunch break due to excessive bleeding.

Eye Removal Surgery

To prevent the cancer from spreading, Histon's left eye had to be removed. "I was told that if I kept the eye, the cancer could spread to my brain," he said. Despite the loss, Histon's unwavering resolve remained.

A Warning to Others

Determined to prevent similar ordeals, Histon shared his story and urged others to pay close attention to skin irregularities. "I've got friends who are builders... who have had moles removed since hearing my story," he said.

The Role of his Wife

Histon's wife, Elaine, a former nurse, played a crucial role in their journey. "We saw the mark on David's face, and he just ignored it apart from putting Sudocream on it, thinking it would go away," she recalled.

Recovery and Remission

Histon's recovery involved four months of radiotherapy and the use of a mask to keep his face in place while eating. He now wears glasses and has adapted to the loss of depth perception.

Charity Work

To give back to the community, Histon and Elaine organized three "Peaky Blinders" themed charity balls. They raised funds for Crohns and Colitis UK, It's in the Bag, and Children with Cancer UK.

Moving Forward

"The balls really helped me move on," Histon reflected. "I was born in Sparkbrook, just around the corner from where the show is set... I've spent hundreds of pounds getting loads of props so you feel like you've stepped back in time" when attending the balls.

Legacy

Histon's story serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection and the resilience of the human spirit. His unwavering optimism and determination have inspired others and made a difference in the lives of countless individuals.
