Biography of David LaChapelle
David LaChapelle, a world-renowned photographer, is considered one of the top ten most famous photographers in the world. He is often referred to as the "Salvador Dali of the third millennium" and is known for his ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, the vulgar into the beautiful, the mundane into the humorous, and the foolish into the original and unique. Hollywood stars, politicians, top models, and showbiz icons all line up to work with him. LaChapelle creates fantastical and sometimes surreal images without resorting to anything supernatural. He simply captures them through his camera lens.
Born on March 11, 1969, in Connecticut, David LaChapelle underwent training at the School of Fine Arts in North Carolina before moving to New York. Upon arriving in the city, he simultaneously enrolled in the Arts Student League and the School of Visual Arts. His first job was given to him by the legendary Andy Warhol, as he was hired to shoot for Interview magazine. Today, LaChapelle is one of the most prestigious and talented photographers on the planet. The American Photo association includes him in the list of the Ten Most Influential People in Photography, and his number of awards continues to grow each year.
In his works, LaChapelle creates imagery filled with freedom, slight eccentricity, and occasional humor, but always grand and unparalleled. Working with him is considered an honor and a stroke of luck. His photographs can be found in the pages of Vogue, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, i-D, Vibe, Interview, The Face, British GQ, and dozens of other fashion publications.
LaChapelle adores being original, and this approach to his work is his trademark, which is why he is highly valued in the fashion and advertising world. He has become the author of advertising campaigns for global brands such as Estee Lauder, Volvo, Levi's, Camel, L'Oreal, Iceberg, MTV, Ecko, Diesel Jeans, Sirius, Ford, and Sky Vodka. He often creates album covers for the most famous stars, including Whitney Houston, Elton John, Madonna, Macy Gray, Moby, Gwen Stefani, and many others.
LaChapelle's most vibrant and significant photography collections emerged at the end of the last century. In 1999, he gifted the world with one of the most luxurious collections of color photographs titled Hotel LaChapelle, which encompasses all the glamor, opulence, and extravagance of the celebrity world. Through these works, which act as a healing balm, viewers reevaluate their surrounding reality. This collection is a continuation of his earlier work, LaChapelle Land (1996), where he captured the most prominent celebrities of the era, including Madonna, Leonardo DiCaprio, Pamela Anderson, Uma Thurman, Marilyn Manson, Alexander McQueen, Mark Wahlberg, Drew Barrymore, and Elton John.
No prestigious exhibition or photo gallery is complete without LaChapelle's works. In the United States, his photographs are displayed in galleries such as Staley-Wise and Toni Shafrazi, and he triumphantly exhibits in Austria, Germany, Italy, and England. LaChapelle is known not only as a photographer but also as the creator of numerous music videos. This is why his list of "star heroes" has expanded to include Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, and Christina Aguilera. His music video for the song "Natural Blues" by Moby, featuring Christina Ricci as an angel, became one of the most outstanding videos in the music industry in 2000 and won the MTV Europe Music Award for "Best Video of the Year."
This was only LaChapelle's third music video. He also received similar awards for this video from the MTV Video Awards and VH-1/Vogue Fashion Awards. Currently, David LaChapelle is exploring yet another role as a showmaker. He became the concept designer for Elton John's spectacular show "The Red Piano" in Las Vegas. While LaChapelle's work may seem distant from reality to the average person, the more one delves into his artistry, the more one realizes that the new reality he creates is not fiction but the world in which everyone dreams to be.
