David Tomlinson, born in Henley-on-Thames, England in 1917, left an indelible mark on the world of cinema with his unforgettable roles.
Early Life and Military Service
After attending Tonbridge School, Tomlinson joined the Grenadier Guards. However, he soon embarked on a different path, working as a clerk in London before discovering his passion for acting in amateur productions. In 1940, Tomlinson made his film debut in "Quiet Wedding."
With the onset of World War II, Tomlinson's acting career took a pause as he served as a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. His father, a renowned London barrister, defended him in the ensuing lawsuit for flying too low.
Return to Acting and Disney Roles
After the war, Tomlinson resumed his acting career. In 1964, he became etched in the minds of children everywhere as George Banks, the patriarch of the Banks family in Disney's iconic "Mary Poppins."
Tomlinson's association with Disney continued with "The Love Bug" (1968) and "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971). Throughout his career, comedy remained his forte.
Marriage and Retirement
For 47 years, Tomlinson was married to actress Audrey Freeman, with whom he had four sons: David Jr., William, Henry, and James. In 2000, at the age of 83, Tomlinson passed away in London, having suffered several heart attacks. He was laid to rest in his estate in Mursley.
