David Zayas: A Versatile Actor with a Storied Career
Early Life and Military ServiceDavid Zayas was born in Puerto Rico but raised in the Bronx, New York. He briefly served in the United States Air Force before becoming a police officer in New York City. His experience in law enforcement would later serve as an invaluable asset in his acting career.
Theatre and Television Debut
Zayas's work as a police officer sparked his interest in acting. He joined the LAByrinth Theatre Company in 1992, a nomadic acting group that provided him with early opportunities on stage and screen. Notable early roles included appearances in the television series "New York Undercover" and "NYPD."
An Incarcerated Icon: Enrique Morales in "Oz"
In 2002, Zayas landed one of his most iconic roles: Enrique Morales in the groundbreaking prison drama "Oz." Over 28 episodes, Zayas's character emerged as one of the show's most feared and ruthless inmates.
The Detective in "Dexter"
After leaving LAByrinth Theatre Company, Zayas moved to Los Angeles to pursue television and film opportunities. His breakthrough role came in the crime thriller "Dexter" as Detective Angel Batista. Zayas portrayed the character for eight seasons, becoming a fan favorite.
