Dean L. Kamen was born in 1951 on Long Island, New York. His father was a comic book illustrator, and his mother worked as a school teacher. As a teenager, he set up a real laboratory in his basement where he worked on light and music projects. The Segway Human Transporter, as it is officially called, operates on batteries and easily reaches speeds of over 20 km/h. Its two wheels are aligned, and each is powered by its own electric motor. When the rider leans forward, the Segway accelerates, and when the rider leans backward, it slows down. The rider's center of gravity is continuously monitored by special sensors. It is said that Dean spent 10 years developing his scooter. He first presented his invention in December 2001 on ABC. Dean expressed his hope that the Segway could possibly become the transportation of the future.

Contributions Beyond the Segway

While the Segway brought Dean Kamen the most fame, another one of his inventions, the iBOT or walking wheelchair, deserves equal attention. This wheelchair for non-ambulatory individuals is based on the same principles as the Segway and is unique because it can traverse stairs, overcome curbs, and even travel on grass. However, it was discovered that the wheelchair, despite its advantages, was difficult to control and also quite expensive. As a result, mass production of the iBOT has not been successfully established.
