Biography of Deborah Cox

Deborah Cox is a renowned R&B pop singer who gained popularity after signing a contract with Arista Records. Her breakthrough was facilitated by the president of the label, Clive Davis, who has introduced world-class stars like Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Janis Joplin, and TLC to the music industry. Deborah Cox was born in Toronto, Canada. From a young age, she began singing and by the age of twelve, she had reached a professional level. Prior to attending a school of fine arts, Deborah Cox performed in small clubs in her hometown. At the age of eighteen, she met Lascelles Stephens, who later became her songwriter. She then recorded her first demos with the assistance of Clive Davis and went on to sign a contract with Arista Records in Los Angeles.

Collaborations and International Success

For her debut album, Clive Davis enlisted renowned American R&B producers. Deborah Cox's debut was a collaborative effort with Keith Thomas, known for his work with Vanessa Williams and Amy Grant. Other contributors to the album included Keith Crouch, Darryl Simmons, and Dallas Austin. Before completing the recording of her debut album, Deborah Cox embarked on a Canadian tour with Celine Dion and performed on concert stages in Europe and Asia.

Her first single, "Sentimental," was released in October 1995. The second single, "Who Do U Love?," sold half a million copies. In January 1999, Deborah Cox's ballad, "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here," reached number two on the Hot 100 chart and remained there for two weeks. In October of the same year, her hit song "We Can't Be Friends" entered the US Top 10.
