Biography of Denis Popov

Denis Popov is a Russian football player, known for his performances in the Premier League for "Chernomorets", CSKA Moscow, "Kuban" and "Spartak-Nalchik". He played for the Russian national team from 2001 to 2003, appearing in a total of 5 matches.

Early Career

Denis Popov made his debut in the Russian Premier League at the age of 17, playing for "Chernomorets" on May 4, 1996, against "Zhemchuzhina" in Sochi. In the same year, he played one more game for the main squad of "Chernomorets" and primarily represented the reserve team in the third division of Russia. In 1997, Popov spent a season at "Kuban" in Slavyansk-na-Kubani, which also competed in the third division of Russia. He scored 16 goals in 27 games, and his team finished first in their zone and advanced to the second division. Popov then returned to "Chernomorets" for the next three years (1998-2000), where he showcased impressive performances.

Career at CSKA Moscow

After his successful stint at "Chernomorets", Popov was invited to join CSKA Moscow. During his time at the club, he became a champion of Russia and won the Cup, and also received several call-ups to the national team. However, in 2004, with the arrival of a new coach, Arthur Jorge, Popov found himself mostly on the bench and played primarily for the reserve team. In August of that year, he left Moscow and joined another Premier League club, "Kuban" in Krasnodar. The transfer came as a surprise, as Valery Gazzaev, the head coach of CSKA Moscow at the time, had previously shown trust in Popov. Additionally, Popov was registered to participate in the UEFA Champions League 2004/05 with CSKA.

Later Career

Popov's move to "Kuban" did not bring success, as the club finished 15th in the Russian Premier League in 2004 and was relegated to the First Division. He continued playing for "Kuban" in 2005 and was subsequently loaned out first to "Chernomorets" Novorossiysk and then to the Belarusian club "Dinamo" Minsk in 2006.

In 2007, Popov began playing for "Spartak-Nalchik" on loan. In May 2007, it was announced that the Nalchik club would not renew the loan agreement with "Kuban" for Popov, and he left the team. After the expiration of his contract with "Kuban" in late December 2007, Denis Popov returned to "Chernomorets" in Novorossiysk.

In August 2008, he signed a contract with Moscow's "Torpedo" until the end of 2009. Popov declared that if the team were relegated to the second division, he would not remain with the club. At the end of the 2008 season, he became the top scorer of the First Division. In May 2009, he left "Torpedo" as a free agent.

In late July 2009, Popov signed a contract with FC "Khimki". After playing two games in the Russian Premier League and one match for the reserves, he left the club, which finished last in the league.

Achievements

Throughout his career, Denis Popov achieved several notable accomplishments. He won the Russian Championship with CSKA Moscow in 2003 and the Russian Cup twice in 2001/02 and 2004/05. Popov was also a participant in the Super Cup of Russia in 2003 and the golden match of the Russian Championship in 2002. In addition, he was recognized as the best scorer in the Third Division in 1997 and the First Division in 2008. He was listed as the third-best player in the Russian Championship in 2002.
