Biography of Dennis Atkins
American, Blind, Runner, and MotivatorDennis Atkins is an American who has overcome adversity and become a renowned runner and motivator. Unfortunately, a disease called retinal pigment degeneration has taken away his vision, leaving him blind. Despite this, Atkins has found solace in running and has become one of the best amateur runners in the country.
Discovering the Disease and Losing Sight
In July 1979, Atkins first heard the term "retinal pigment degeneration." It started with night blindness, and Atkins initially thought it was just a minor vision problem that could be corrected with glasses. However, medical professionals soon realized that regular glasses could not fix his condition. Over time, Atkins experienced problems with his peripheral vision, and eventually, his overall vision was affected. He lost the ability to recognize faces and read. At best, he could see vague shadows in suitable lighting, which was enough for him to navigate streets and his home without bumping into objects.
Finding Refuge in Running
Instead of letting his diagnosis define him, Atkins turned to running. He began running while his vision was still relatively intact and has continued the habit to this day. Currently, Atkins averages about 8-9 miles (approximately 13-15 kilometers) per day. His total mileage is a testament to his dedication, recently surpassing 77,000 miles. However, running is not his only focus. Atkins regularly participates in various major competitions, including 43 marathons and numerous half-marathons.
Running for a Cause
Atkins has used his passion for running as an opportunity to give back. In at least five instances, he embarked on marathons to raise funds for disabled individuals and others in need. Through these efforts, Atkins has raised over $72,000. These funds have been used to build ramps, widen doorways, and purchase much-needed wheelchairs. Some may find Atkins' chosen activity peculiar given his condition, but he sees it as one of the few ways to spend his time now that other activities are more challenging or impossible.
Overcoming Challenges and Motivating Others
Running serves as a symbol of Atkins' refusal to succumb to despair and helplessness. Through his perseverance, he demonstrates his unwillingness to give up in the face of adversity. This determination extends beyond his running endeavors. Even after losing his vision, Atkins continued working at 'American Family Insurance,' excelling in his responsibilities while simultaneously pursuing higher education. He earned both a master's and doctorate in business administration through distance learning.
In 2012, Atkins left the insurance company to pursue a new and more fulfilling career as a motivational speaker. His story, coupled with his oratory skills, serves as a powerful motivation for those feeling discouraged. Atkins has the ability to ignite a spark in the hearts of others through his well-chosen words and personal experiences.
