Denzel Washington was born on February 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York. He was the middle child of three born to Denzel Hayes Washington Sr. and Lennis Washington. His father was a minister and his mother was a beautician. His parents' professions played a significant role in shaping his interest in the arts.

Washington's parents divorced when he was fourteen. Following high school, he enrolled at Fordham University in New York City. He graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism. While at Fordham, Washington participated in student drama productions.
